Kidney disease at a glance

The kidneys usually give no symptoms until they are badly damaged. That is why kidney disease is mostly found with blood and urine tests, not with pain or discomfort.

A single number is not a diagnosis. Creatinine and eGFR have to be read together with a urine test, blood pressure, medicines and the trend over several tests.

In chronic disease, damaged kidney tissue usually does not return to its earlier state. So the aim of treatment is to slow the disease, keep kidney function and prevent complications, and regular follow-up is part of the path.
